Our foundation degrees, in partnership with the University of Plymouth, are equivalent to studying for the first two years of an honours degree, but unlike traditional degrees, there are no formal entry requirements. Created in collaboration with employers, they combine academic study with developing the skills and attributes needed in the workplace. It makes them ideal preparation for a specific profession or industry or for making progress in your existing career. You can always convert to a full honours degree by taking a top-up course on completion.

Assistant Practitioners work as part of the wider health and social care team and have direct contact with patients, service users or clients providing high quality and compassionate care. They work at a level above that of Healthcare Support Workers and have a more in-depth understanding about factors that influence health and ill-health (e.g. anatomy and physiology).

This course, awarded by the University of Plymouth, consists of 12 subject modules, and each module has two assessed assignments.

First year (Level 4) modules include:
– Foundations of health and social care practice
– Concepts of health and wellbeing
– Human growth and development
– Vocational competence for health and social care practice
– Understanding practice
– The patient journey and care process

Second year (Level 5) consists of six modules – with four core modules:
– Evidence based practice
– Leadership and ethics in practice
– Clinical competence and patient assessment
– Public health and health promotion

Two optional modules are chosen at the start of the second year of study. Optional modules can be taken from the following:
– Long term conditions
– Dementia and cognitive dysfunction
– Tissue viability
– Practice based study
– Management of the plus size patient
– The allied health professions
– Understanding mental health
– Management and leadership in mental health
– Occupational studies: Foundations of occupational therapy practice 1
– Occupational studies: Foundations of occupational therapy practice 2

Want to go to university? Want a change of career? Or want a new challenge?
No A Levels? No problem! It is never too late to study for a degree even if you have no qualifications at all. Or you may already have some qualifications at GCSE, NVQ or BTEC but not enough to get into university. Many adults return to education to improve their career opportunities and achieve their personal goals. Access to Higher Education Diplomas enable mature students to apply for a degree programme in only one year, full-time. So if you have a career path in mind which requires a degree and you thought you could never do it – think again.

Our Access Diplomas also cater for students who have been away from studying for some time. The course will equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to achieve your goals, as well as provide support and encouragement throughout the year.

To succeed, you’ll need to be aged 19 or over, motivated, enthusiastic, able to manage your time effectively and be ready to study. You will be part of a group of adult students who are excited about learning and are willing to participate and work hard with other members of the group.

Many people worry that they’re too old to do an Access course or will feel out of place – in fact, there’s no upper age limit and there will be many other mature students on this course – just like you. All you need is to be committed to studying and focused on your career choice.

During the course, you will study the following subjects:
– English Literature
– Psychology
– Sociology
– Study Skills

You will also have dedicated tutorial sessions, where you will receive support throughout your year of study including guidance and support for your UCAS application to university.
